Environmental monitoring - refugee camps

Terra Orbit has developed methods for detailed mapping of refugee camps and the inclusion of this information in GIS-systems. Important information on refugee camp location, area, and environment can be obtained from satellite images. This information can be used in disaster preparedness, emergency aid and longer-term relief efforts.

At present, near real-time information is available from e.g. SPOT and Radarsat. In the near future, very high-resolution satellite images capable of revealing details down to 1 meter resolution will be lauched.

Terra Orbit, as one of a few companies, already has experience with this kind of detailed images for refugee camp mapping using declassified Russian intelligence satellite data. The image is a 2 meter resolution satellite image of Um Burush refugee camp in the Sudan.
